Golden Buddha, Marble Temple, Wat Indharawihan & Wat Arun (BK7)
Description
- 08:00 Pick up from your hotel in Bangkok and travel to Wat Traimit which is also known as the Golden Buddha. This giant Buddha statue is 3m high and is made of solid gold and weighs 5.5 tonnes. It is thought to have been constructed around the 13th century and was originally located in Sukhothai City.
- At some point this beautiful image was covered in plaster stucco to give it a plain appearance and conceal its true value and was relocated to Ayutthaya. When Bangkok was established as the new capital city of Thailand in 1801 many Buddha images and statues were then relocated to Bangkok temples from around the country. The Golden Buddha (still encased in plaster) was relocated to Wat Chotanaram. Wat Chotanaram eventually fell into disrepair and the Golden Buddha was again moved to its current location at Wat Traimit and forgotten. During restoration work in 1955 some of the covering plaster fell off revealing the golden image below and the Golden Buddha was finally rediscovered. This Buddha statue is very beautiful with the body of the statue consisting of 40% pure gold, chin to forehead is 80% pure gold and hair and topknot 99% pure gold.
- After Wat Traimit you will travel to Wat Benchamabophit also known as the Marble Temple. Wat Benchamabophit is an illustrious Buddhist temple in Bangkok. It is renowned for its exquisite architectural design and use of white Carrara marble making it one of the most attractive and significant temples in the city. Wat Benchamabophit was constructed in the late 19th century during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). The primary ordination hall (ubosot) has ornate gables, white marble pillars and a gold-leaf-decorated Thai-style roof.
- After Wat Benchamabophit you will travel to Wat Indharawihan where you can experience the awe of standing before the towering 32m Buddha statue also known as ‘Luang Pho To’ or ‘Phra Si Ariyamettra’. This giant statue took 60 years to construct and was completed in 1927. Wat Indharawihan itself is a very old temple and was originally constructed around the 13th century at the beginning of the Ayutthaya Kingdom and is considered a class III royal temple.
- Lunch at local restaurant.
- After lunch you will take a shared boat across the Chao Phraya River to visit Wat Arun also known as the Temple of Dawn. It is regarded as one of the city’s most recognisable monuments and is noted for its unusual architectural design and expansive views of the river and the skyline.
